Windows Live Messenger, more popularly known as MSN Messenger, is a free communication application that allows individuals to connect via text chats, pictures, and videos. It contains Facebook and LinkedIn integration software, and it can be installed and used on PC and Mac desktops and laptops, smart phones, and Xbox 360. It has a simple tab system, giving users easy access to their MSN email accounts, Live Writer, and safety and security features.

Users have the ability to chat via text in real time and then save the conversations for later retrieval. They have the option to go "invisible" so as not to announce their presence, and any email address can be used to create an account. The program is compatible with Yahoo Messenger, and there is an option to import Yahoo contacts.

This program was first released in 1999; it remained under the brand name MSN Messenger until 2005, when it was converted to Windows Live. The Windows Live messaging system was utilized for four years until Microsoft acquired Skype and implored all of its Messenger users to convert. Support for Windows Live was discontinued in April 2013, and all users are currently asked to import their Messenger contacts into Skype to stay connected.
